There are huge numbers of artists who paint for many differing reasons. Are you an amateur painting for pleasure, or for self-therapy? Or are you a professional painting to sell your work? And if you are professional, do you expect to make your living this way, or is it an adjunct to some other income? Also, what is your personality? Are you tough-minded, or a tender flower? All of these elements will play into how you will honestly answer this question.
“Should” only comes into play for an artist when we are talking about the business of art. Then there may possibly be advice that people can give about what is recommended behavior, attitudes, and procedures - because at least to some degree, that’s about making money, and marketing, etc., and those are not creative aspects.
